He had been one of those arguing no increase despite continuing losses in the operation.
Sounds like Chuck, were he around today, would get along fine with Commissioner Fiori. Fiori stated publicly he is opposed to any rate increases in the sewer service areas in his district. If that proves to be the case, those districts will just continue to lose big bucks and the County will again come looking to OP area to foot the bill for most of those losses. Look -- here are the political aspects in my opinion: Mitrecic can't stand Bertino and Bunting. Bertino was likely to be Commissioner president again this year, but for Mitrecic convincing Ted Elder to give up support for Bertino in return for Mitrecic assuring Elder he would become president. Mitrecic cobbled together four votes - his, Elder, Purnell, and Fiori on the day of electing a new president and Chip was out. Those four now more or less control the County Commissioners. Regardless of what anyone may think, Mitrecic pulled off a masterful political coup. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I have to shake my head as I read this. When the sale of MMU to the County was closed, the president of the OPA board, Chuck Haynes, was grinning ear to ear. "this will insure that our rates will be less than had the utility continued to be owned by a private company" Why?? "Because private companies pay taxes and County owned don't." I pointed out the recent torture I had gone through at the PUC meeting where I had sought small rate increases and lost. He had been one of those arguing no increase despite continuing losses in the operation. I asked who would oversee the operation at the association level to ensure that the utility was run for the benefit of the community and not the County. And who would argue for fair rate policies. I also argued that government traditionally results in less efficient and more costly operations. He was having none of that. Chuck was not alone in celebrating the sale. A happy man and a good guy but a bit blind to the downside of government operations. He was a retired federal government accountant. |
