believe we - the community - could and should come up with a much better overall plan and spend less money. How about this for some wild thoughts about an overall plan? 1. The Sports core area should be a "Town Center." It would have the Post Office, Library, a bank, The Police Dept, the fire Station and the OPA Administrative offices. Instead of a Community Center with meeting space and multi-purpose rooms, the new building would cover the daily functions of the Police Dept and administration. A lot less space needed and the building could be compatible with the existing buildings (except the swimming pool, covered or not). 2. Renovate the existing administration building to hold the Recreation and Parks Dept and some meeting rooms, all to be controlled by Rec & Parks. 3. Renovate/replace the existing Community Hall/Fire Station for use as a gym-teen center and special events center (with adequate kitchen facilities) under the control of the Rec & Parks dept. Events involving food to be controlled by Parks and Rec, not the Yacht Club management. Pro: All administration and public safety would be more geographically centralized and assessable from/to Rt. 589. An amenity function ( Parks & Rec.) would remain located adjacent to the majority of the spaces it uses, including Whitehorse Park which is intensively used for the summer camp program. Con: We would be starting from scratch in designing facilities. Construction and relocation would take longer. The Community Hall would have to be held together longer and there would be gaps in the availability of facilities during construction phases. Issues: Do we really need the North fire station? Can the South station accommodate, or be expanded to accommodate, necessary equipment? What is overall cost and feasible timeline? How should project be financed? Is there any merit to this concept? Just something to think about. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Janet, Good comments. The addition of the pool enclosure proved to us that the majority had no thought to the master sports core plan because there was none. I'd like to see a view of the entire area with the PE (pool enclosure), CC, parking lot, and wet pond from the north, east, and west. We have no clue what this CC will look like looking from the east. Any brick in the back of it? Further, the decision on the future use of the old community hall does enter into any decision on the new CC. Just what does $1.5 million mean? This number comes up in the same manner the $3.9 number came up. If someone can throw out a number without ever having an intrusive engineering study done and without telling us what that number means, the number has no meaning to the membership or anyone except to impress others. If we don't have a decision on the future use of that building, we don't know what it would cost to improve that building to perform that purpose. I believe we - the community - could and should come up with a much better overall plan and spend less money. Bill |
