You are streaching my memory. In one of my college courses the concept that whenever an organization reaches a critical size the stated purpose of the organization becomes subordinate to organizational maintenance. It then went on to describe some of the symptoms which indicate the size has been reached. It was one of those insights that just stuck in my mind because I could see some of it around me at the Phone Co. I thought the author was Alvin Toffler but thats wrong. I'm going to keep searching and I'll let you know. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: From what I find on the internet, a definition of organizational maintenance is more along the lines of: Maintenance that is the responsibility of and performed by a using organization on its assigned equipment. Its phases normally consist of inspecting, servicing, lubricating, and adjusting, as well as the replacing of parts, minor assemblies, and subassemblies. I didn't find any references to OM involving "motivation" or budget fights. If you can point me to some references I'd like to take a look. |
