Hey don't knock the stone age. Knowledge of guys like Machiavelli and Malthus is still relevant. I may have graduated HS in the stone age but I didn't finish my degree (computer science major, accounting minor) until 1998. The fun of taking 35 yrs to get it was seeing all the changes in theory and practice. The most insidious trait of Organizational Maintenance is that it is not always a conscious behavior. Its' major contributors often do not recognize their own motives.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: In one of my college courses the concept that whenever an organization reaches a critical size the stated purpose of the organization becomes subordinate to organizational maintenance. One of your college courses? Heck, let's forget the stone age stuff. Anyway, I understand your basic premise, and agree. However, I have no idea how much "empire building" is at work in the various OPA departments, or if it contributes to budget growth that translates into assessment increases. |
