. . . too many of the BOD’s decisions are ad hoc simply because they do not have a sense of the pulse of their constituents.
Hi Ev There was a time when the BOD had some public meetings where they invited comments on issues, a week or two before formally debating and voting on formal motions. Then there was a time when a board member, Judy Boggs held frequent meetings in members homes to discuss issues. Both of these initiated more member participation. Its lacking now, as you've commented. Seems they can get inputs in various ways, if they wanted it. Tom |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Joe, you surprise me…pleasantly I might add. Your comments about a pure or direct democracy are quite surprising and inevitability brings one back to the classic debate of Madison vs Jeffersonian governance and BTW, Jefferson never did respond to Madison’s assertions in Federalist Paper #10. Yes, the tyranny of the majority is always present however in the context of a HOA I’m more inclined to support the direct form where the citizens (owners) do indeed have an extraordinary amount of input. My contention is that too many of the BOD’s decisions are ad hoc simply because they do not have a sense of the pulse of their constituents. Given the nature of the issues in a HOA my preference is not to have my representatives substitute their judgement in lieu of the judgment of the majority but alas that comment drives us right back to the classic and perennial debate of the form of governance we want. From my perspective the BODs are entitled to have a clear understanding of the wants and needs of their constituents and therefore the data is need to guide initiatives. |
