I'm sure the publisher of the Harry Potter books could have employed a proof reader. The problem is that when the author gets so big (say bloated Tom Clancy, for instance) they don't want an editor messing with their baby. I remember reading one of the later books by Ken Follett who wrote Eye of the Needle..a good book and great movie. In this later book, one of the characters killed off in one chapter briefly reappeared in the next chapter. The book went straight to recycling.
As for "baited breath"...I'd recommend Lavoris. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Oops, you are right Joe , even authors get that one wrong. Search in Google and you'll find about the same number of hits for 'baited breath' as 'bated breath'. In one of the best selling books of all time, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (whose publisher could surely have afforded the services of a proof-reader), we have:"The whole common room listened with baited breath." |
