Section 5: OPA Board Subject: OPA Food Truck Msg# 940126

Larry - I appreciate your response and will support your efforts as I believe there is an absolute need to reign in the "tax and spend" approach this board seems to support. In my professional life, as I suspect in many other OPA members, decisions are made on relevant data that shows, among other things, demand for the product service, the up front financial investment, ongoing operational costs and the effects of the previous two items on the overall fiscal budget. The list goes on, but I hope my point is made.
I am interested in what drove the decision to have a food truck as, absent of any relevant data to support the idea, I believe this concept and associated expense are absurd! Doug Parks |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Joe, I was willing to try and give the GM the benefit of the doubt on some items but this is crazy. First off I don't think you can get and outfit a food truck for $55k. Second, why would we compete with the food at the YC or S&R club. The S&R club grill was very nice last year. It was reasonable and the quality of the food and service was very good. Third, why would we want to run another operation that will require significant maintenance when maintenance does not appear to be our strong pint in OP. When you tie this budget with the CIP you have to scratch your head. I can't understand why we would not put the money into the Beach club and Country club before we spend a large sum on a food truck. If I had to guess, we are probably looking at closer to $100k to get a food truck. The bridges need to be addressed and the last thing we need at this moment is another Admin building. While the GM submitted a budget that would raise assessments by $22 something has to be done to stop this run away train. It appears his board majority won't stop him. After seeing the CIP and some of the details on the budget I feel I can't sit by and do nothing but complain. With that being said, I am going to run for the board in 2016. I can assure anyone interested that I have no alignment with any faction however I do believe I share a lot of the views that Tom Herrick campaigned on last year. I think we need more people on the board who will try and represent all the owners of OP and be willing to do what is in the best interest of all OP members. I believe that with the change of board members that will occur this year there is an opportunity for the board to take back control of operations of our community. I think we should look at what we want to be. I don't agree with our mission statement of being, "the premier resort community". While I strongly support all the amenities I don't think we need to provide more for others outside of the community. I think we should adjust our mission to being a community that provides a good variety of activities to meet the needs our diverse home owners and guests. I also think we need to be affordable. While I don't think we need to be a profit center, I think we can do better than we are doing. The board should be focused on the Beach Club, Country Club, bridges, computer systems and trying to find ways to improve the financial of the departments not getting close to break even. Building a new Fire House or new Admin building is not something I think should be anywhere near the front burner. I can assure you I don't have all the answers but I think I could work with the remaining board members to move the Board and community back in the right direction. Larry |
