Neil, Pickle Ball was originally a drop-in sport played indoors for a $3.00 fee. The group has scheduled play INDOORS four times each week. Two years ago it was decided to change the drop-in fee to $5.00 OR a yearly membership fee of $100.00. (Subsequently changed this past year to the same as Paddle Tennis at $150.00). Not a bad idea if your want to build membership numbers rapidly. Now if a pickle ball player decided to play only twice a week indoors instead of the four times afforded,, the cost breaks down to less than $1.50 per play. No where else can I see this value being given away at such a low cost to play year round in an indoor climate controlled facility. "keep in mind we actually came out in the plus side in the book (unlike many other that keep losing money) In past years Platform Tennis averaged close to plus $10,000 in net operating expenses for our association (2011 $11,441.) (2012 $10,904.) (2013 $6,892.) (2014 $9,216). When Pickle ball became an amenity membership in 2015, it was decided by management to off-set the losses in tennis due to declining membership numbers and the high expense of performing daily maintenance on the soft tennis courts (operating loss in 2014 minus $19,188.) by combining all three racquet sports together to share in those losses. Platform Tennis paid in a greater percentage of that loss (determined arbitrarily by management) and consequently showed net operating losses in 2015 minus $289.00 with a net operating loss forecast in 2016 of $2,000.00. In is the change in bookkeeping method only that Platform Tennis is now showing a loss in overall revenue. If Pickle ball was assessed the same percentage contribution, the numbers would not be so skewed. Tom Herrick |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: So Joe, should we ask for the money back we paid for an amenity we don't really have. Keep in mind that we actually came out in the plus side in the books (unlike many of the others that keep losing $) Then again.. If we had our own courts perhaps the folks who have not renewed because of no dedicated courts would renew & even hold tournaments & bring even more money in. Would not cost much to change over 2 tennis courts and then all the rest is profit for OP... |
