Forget the USPS. With millions in reserve, it'a time for OPA to develop a plan to systematically replace those mailbox stations and place them under covered pavilions, similar to the one you see in Mumford's Landing.
Tom, at the risk of sounding negative I have not heard any outcry to place structures over our mailboxes. If that becomes the thrust as Marty mentioned then they had better take a look at the stations. For instance on Newport the station has about a 10" diameter tree growing right next [about 6"] next to the boxes. The two main concerns I have heard is to replace the support posts and maintenance of the areas.[leaves, snow, debris] Just today someone mentioned to me what they considered the deplorable condition of the station on Sandy Hook just off the Parkway. As to cost it seems that boxes that currently have structures over them are more like Colonial Village or The Parke where they were put in by the builder and expected to be maintained by those specific places that usually have their own homeowners group. Areas such as section 1 are a different ballgame where it is not considered a "neighborhood". Just because we have "reserves" does not mean we should look for projects on which they could be spent without a thorough evaluation of the need. Now personally I would not have a problem with boxes on a main route such as Ocean Parkway be covered for appearance where side streets such as mine are not. They all however should have a presentable appearance and be maintained. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Jack Forget the USPS. Who would object to this modernization effort? Presently, those mailbox stactions are an eyesore. I have a construction background and I would gladly head up an engineering Task Force to study this topic. Anyone out there with me? |
