Paul, I think you totally missed the point about Parks. Nothing wrong with telling people not to drink the water when swimming. It is, however, in my view, absurd to tell children not to drink the water while allowing them to swim in water that the Swim Guide says is unsafe and unhealthy. I hope you can see the distinction. Pointing out that absurdity is not a cheap shot. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Thanks for bring this important information to public attention-safe swimming is an important topic this time of year. Unfortunately your cheap shot at Doug Parks who recommended that his grandchildren not drink the water was off the mark. As a pediatrician in practice for 40 years I always cautioned my young patients not to drink the water when doing recreational swimming in any water. Even chlorinated pools can still harbor microbes associated with RWI (recreational water illness). This warning from Doug Parks not to drink the water is published in the AAP and CDC guidelines as the number one way to prevent RWI. As I told my young patients and their parents: you don't drink the water you bathe in so why drink the water you swim in. I hope you will agree with me, Doug Parks, the AAP and the CDC that swallowing any water when doing recreational swimming is the one of most important ways to avoid contracting a RWI. |
