Good afternoon Joe,
Sorry for just getting back to you. I needed some time to answer this one. Our original design included upgrades to the Beauchamp Road culverts and downstream areas to help storm runoff leave the Ocean Pines property more efficiently, but due to unforeseen issues with the downstream property owner and reductions in available grant monies due to the COVID pandemic, the scope of the ultimate project had to be revised as you are aware. The current improvement plan proposes to add approximately 50,000 cubic feet of overall storage within Bainbridge Pond, almost all attributable to the small amounts of fill (ranging from 1” – 9”) being placed to repair and level the pond’s dam embankment after years of erosion. The pond is also receiving a new outlet structure to better control storm outflows, as well as provide OPA maintenance staff a means to lower the water level in the pond in advance of anticipated large storm events, such as hurricanes. This will help greatly with stormwater when storms hit. Below Bainbridge Pond, the current plan proposes to replace the existing culverts under Beaconhill Rd, Sandyhook Rd, and Pinehurst Rd to ensure they remain viable conduits during storm events. As part of our changes to the plans to reflect the removal of the outfall improvements under Beauchamp Rd, we reviewed the proposed pipe sizing under all three roads, and downsized the pipes from the original scope of work under Sandyhook so as to maintain storage in upstream swale section and not release more peak storm runoff into the areas around the Pinehurst Rd culvert crossing than is currently going there today. Should we be able to one day improve conditions under and below Beauchamp Rd, additional capacity at this crossing can always be added at a later date. We worked together very thoroughly with the engineers, county and Bobby Shockley with Stormwater mgt to make sure we didn’t impact areas worse with any changes we made to the original scope of work. I hope this brief overview of the improvements currently being proposed is helpful in explaining it. Colby |
