The advantage France & Germany have over us is that they decided on one design for their plants and then built them all the same, cookie cutter if you will. Parts are interchangeable which is a great advantage. Our plants on the other hand are all of different design which results in a much higher cost to build as everything is a custom designed part, nothing "off the shelf" can be used. I often wonder why we didn't go that route, could it be the builders were able to make way more profit? | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Coal gasification in the US has been tough to achieve at the level needed for commercial power plants. Several US power companies dropped those efforts by 2012-- American Electric power, NRG Energy, Xcel Energy, etc. More recently Southern Co shut down its efforts to adopt that coal gasification at two power plants -- [Even with some assistance of govt grants towards that technology.] Hasn't been viable here for commercial power plants, yet. Southern Company is a utility I've been watching. They may make history this yr or next, with the first new nuclear power plant unit coming on line in the US this century. |
