I have no idea why Dr. Horn abstained. However, if instead of denouncing her choice to abstain why not ask her? I have done that in the past when I was disappointed with a vote. My experience is she has well thought through reasoning for her decision. I still might not agree with her. I voted for her based on her qualifications. Despite slings and arrows aimed at her that are to some extent groundless she has lived up to my expectations.
I do not disagree that Colette Horn is a competent, qualified board member. However, that does not mean I must agree with every POLITICAL decision she or other board members make. As for "asking her" about her vote, or lack thereof, that very question was raised during the meeting. She could have taken the opportunity to do so. She did not. More troublesome is that Horn did not follow the OPA bylaws. The board president, not the board, is charged under the by-laws with making all committee appointments. She had one by-laws required task with regard to Lakernick's application -- to appoint him to the committee and ask the board for its consent, or to not appoint Lakernick - in which case there would have been no vote. She failed in her duties. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: When deciding on a member of a committee or a board of directors, It is imperative to look for qualities that will enhance the team. It is even more important when you are running a small city or town. I have been on many boards and committees. I think it is important to look for the following characteristics: leadership, self-awareness, problem solving skills, communication skills conflict resolution skills, adaptable and most of all respect. In this day and age board/committee members have a responsibility to be sensitive to the changes in society. That means accepting things that in 1950’s were scandalous i.e. women’s rights, gender fluidity and marriage equality. The appropriate response when a measure is voted down is not rudeness, bullying or complaining that everyone but you is wrong. Mr. Lackernit, has displayed very few of those qualities. Certainly not enough to convince three voting members and two abstaining members. I am disappointed in the author calling the board members disgraceful. There is always more under the surface than above. I have no idea why Dr. Horn abstained. However, if instead of denouncing her choice to abstain why not ask her? As the Chairperson of the Board of Directors she is responsible for putting an effective team member on the committees. Mr. Lackernit has not demonstrated effective team member qualities. I want to comment on Amy Peck’s decision to abstain. I have no idea why she abstained. However, she had to bring Mr. Lackernit’s application to the board. That does not mean she thought he was best suited for the Strategic Planning Committee. However, if he would be voted on to the committee she would have to work with him. Abstaining is the best way to remain neutral, rather than being confronted with his unprofessional behavior at every meeting. I was most impressed with the board members when I attended the last Board meeting. It was clear to me they are utilizing the survey sent to all home owners to direct their committee and bring recommendations to the Board. They worked as a team with varying positions on issues. That is the kind of team work that is necessary for effective leadership of our community. |
