Joe,
i agree with your thoughts about the current level of public discussion. One contributing factor, it seems to me, is the lack of tolerance for opposing views. The current tenor of many discussions, regardless of the medium, boils down to "I am right, you are wrong and therefore you are foolish, an idiot, my enemy or part of some sort of cabal or conspiracy. Not sure what the solution is. sj |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Full disclosure, I am (more often than I care to admit) foolish. Probably goes for most of us -- maybe even Teddy to a degree in his day. That said, the dumbing down of public discourse, even on what is passed for TV "news" and on places like Facebook, is discouraging. Practically speaking, society has essentially reached the lowest common denominator when it comes to public language - written or spoken. |
