I have been mulling over this for a couple of days. It seems like it is district vs district instead of the county doing the correct thing.
I'm not so sure that is the case. Rather than "district vs district," it seems to be a case of commissioners other than the two elected by voters in the Ocean Pines districts being totally unconcerned about Ocean Pines. The impetus for this anti Ocean Pines sentiment goes back many decades. At one time there were five districts and the vote was county-wide. Thus, candidates needed to campaign across the entire county. In the current setup, each election district is independent and those in districts outside the Ocean Pines area couldn't care less what voters in the Ocean Pines area think. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I have been mulling over this for a couple of days. It seems like it is district vs district instead of the county doing the correct thing. Want more outrage? At the April 1, 2025, County Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Bertino proposed a motion to have an outside firm do an independent audit of the County Treasurer's Office to look into improper transfers of funds and other irregularities. Bunting seconded the motion. It was rejected by the other five Commissioners. During discussion of the motion, Fiori tried to act like a prosecuting attorney while questioning Bertino. Bertino put him down -- with class. This really sends up red flags. Why would an overseer of financial accounting vote down an audit unless they had a concern for the outcome. Was there any input from the ones who voted it down? Interestingly, most of the loan money was to service areas in Fiori's district. With primary elections coming up next spring, a few weeks ago Fiori said he would not vote to increase rates for service areas in his district, but surely will be a hero in his district if he can pull off having Ocean Pines ratepayers foot the bill. So noted and explains that person's position. Perhaps the most outrageous statement made at that meeting last Tuesday was Commissioner Ted Elder saying he opposed any independent audit of the County Treasurer's Office because it might have an adverse impact on the "morale" of County employees. To which Bertino replied he was more concerned about the morale of County taxpayers. That is a ridiculous statement from anyone. If you have done nothing wrong, why would that enter your mind? A previous experience in my work life. I worked for a major corporation that is currently number three in the country and five in the world in their section. I was trying to get something resolved and copied the president of my company. The next thing I know they sent in the FBI to interview me to see if I was involved. I was a bit intimidated but it did not affect my moral as I had done nothing wrong. They were doing the correct thing. As a side note, I had never even had a traffic ticket until I moved to Ocean Pines, driving in on Cathell Rd at night for a speeding ticket by radar. Thank you, OP. |
