Section 5: OPA Board Subject: Community Center Contract Msg# 387553

Questioning the cost escalation issues regarding the new community center is certainly within the scope of your responsibility as a director...and you should be applauded for your efforts in this vein...but your desire to modify the location and size goes against the mandate handed to you by the membership. These items were approved in the referendum by a majority of voters...based upon a proposal from the board. You have a responsibility to those voters to do everything possible to bring about the center they approved...regardless of your own agenda as to location and size...those arguments were settled when the votes were counted. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Ed, It really isn't a "deserves" it issue. Consider this. I think most people want or would agree to a community center if a few important items and legitimate concerns were readdressed and corrected. 1. Location? One minute we are concerned with storm water and open spaces and nature walks and the next we are going to build a 29000 sq foot building (huge) and the parking lot twice its size to accommodate it, on the beautiful open area the borders our community. Huh? Go look at the latest rendition of the community center and see total area that it will consume out. Real eye opener. 2. Size? If we need a total of 24,500sq feet of meeting space etc. Fine, but it was not stated as EXTRA sq. feet. Oops, slight omission of the space that we already have. Let's see if you do the math may be an extra 14-16 thousand sq feet. Do we need an auditorium and a gym? 3. Price? I have not seen authorization given to build a 6 Million dollar building. 4. Inconsistencies of information? You know it would be nice for us to, stop, look and listen, and make sure this train is on the right track. And then Maybe we could put most everyone on the train, rather than run over them. What? a win win situation? May be it is just that simple. But we would have to want to make that happen. It is better than a train wreck. |
