Are your numbers assuming that the $3.95 beer translates to total profit?? If its only 50% profit, then your example recovers only half of the YC's losses. Perhaps you know the percent of costs to revenues. It seems that someone, a while back, mentioned the YC costs were about 2/3rds of revenues. Such ratio that would send only 1/3 to the bottom line, in net profit/loss improvement. And if half of the population ( or some large portion) didn't cooperate, then your example is again unrealistic. A substantial portion don't even bother to vote their OPA ballots, so this tells something about public participation And if some portion of those patrons were dissatisfied with something, then repeat patronage become problematical. It seems this example is just another way to say that any number of a large loss ($140,000) becomes a much smaller number if spread over a large number of residents. That seems to me to be in the category of slick politicians explaining away or justifiying their lack of action, or lack of performance. A number of criticisms here of the YC seem to be sincere pleas for improvement in the operation, and that would seem to be the eventual solution. And these people commenting seem to be hoping their pleas won't fall on deaf ears, or be brushed off with slick justifications. Tom

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Robert: I have personally never had those kind of problems you describe at the Yacht Club. Let's look at it this way. I drink an occasional cold beer. The cost of an imported bottle of beer at the Club is a fair $ 3.95. Assuming that the bartender does not under or over cook it I would normally add a 20% tip, or $.80 plus tax of $.24 for a total of say $ 5.00. Now, my wife is also known to enjoy a cold beer, so, I am at $10.00 a round. Let's say that we each have two for a big night out of $20.00. Ok, now divide that, less the tip and tax, into our discussion number of $84.00 and we only need 5.5 more visits and we are done. Robert, while I really do sympathize with your you on your previous problems at the club the only way that those kind of things ever get fixed is by telling Joe or Larry about it. I once got a bad steak at the old Talbot Street Cafe and did not tell the owner because they were personal friends. They found out later and were so mad at me that it almost ended our friendship. Like it or not you and I are in the Yacht Club business and we need to work together to make it a success, or, convince a majority of the board to close it down. Marty |
