That's interesting because, also in the Progress, was a discussion about the food truck. I forget if it was with Terry or another Board member but the impression was that they had received a LOT of negative feedback from the community and I believe an implication that just because it was approved did not mean the money would be spent. Hi Jack, I cannot believe that a Food Truck will be bought. It is one of the silliest ideas to come down the pike in many a year! When you count the number of "Food Truck Appropriate" events that we have in OP....the number of days that the pools are open in the season, and how many warm Fri. and Sat. nights there are in the season, and then allow for days that it could rain. It just would not make sense to buy our own truck. I have heard that the Kiwanis did not want to "do hot dogs" anymore at the Thursday Concerts in the Park, and that is a good place for a Food Truck. Many families come early with picnics and make a real event of those Thursdays, and some came and got hot dogs. At the last concert last summer there were no hot dogs. Of course, if it rained ...no money would be made. On week days, the Food Truck cannot be at two pools at one time, so they would have to alternate, and if it rains the pools will close. A Food Truck is a BUSINESS. You call up a Food Truck when you need one, and it seems that an Ocean Pines resident owns such a business. It would make a heck of a lot more sense to try out how the whole thing would work rather than go buy one. Buying the truck is ONLY THE BEGINNING! The costs go on all year when business may be very bad or non-existent. There is so much involved. I read an article the other day about how hard it is for those who do have Food Truck businesses in the wintertime. They have to decide whether to keep the window open in the frigid weather, and how to keep the cold out if they do. If the window is closed, it may look like they are not open. They mentioned that if they can park near a tall building, customers will watch from the window to see when the line is short and go down when it looks like they won't have to wait in the cold. Also ...they might call a friend who may have a window and can see the truck. These trucks are the ones who usually do a HUGE business every day.... but one woman said she needs to stay open because the family needs the money and they have made the investment in the truck. She talked about how cold and uncomfortable ii is. I noticed that the OP resident who wrote the letter is in Florida. I really don't think the OP BoD is dumb enough to actually BUY a truck. CALL ONE to come over...maybe. In our area Food Trucks are really popular and we use them all the time. A great convenience! PTA attendance at our elementary school has increased amazingly since the Pizza Truck started coming over early on PTA night a couple of years ago. Mom doesn't have to cook, and can get there on time with the kids, socialize, kids do homework, no dishes to wash. Dad goes from work to the school has fun and doesn't complain. Nancy |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Having said that, if 200 people showed up at the board meeting, all demanding there be no food truck, I suspect there would not be a food truck in the budget. That's interesting because, also in the Progress, was a discussion about the food truck. I forget if it was with Terry or another Board member but the impression was that they had received a LOT of negative feedback from the community and I believe an implication that just because it was approved did not mean the money would be spent. |
