| SAC was a love - hate relationship, sorry to leave but glad to be gone! I still stay in touch with several of my squadron buddies, we had a reunion a few years ago in O.P. that I hosted. We all remember the good times but the bad times are just a distant memory....who can ever forget "Bombs Away With Curt LeMay"? Loring sounds like a not so nice station, West Texas was HOT in the summer, April through October but the winter was mild for the most part. We only had to shovel our way through the Bacardi Rum and Jose Cervera Tequila bottles, only cost $0.75 for a liter bottle across the bridge in Old Mexico. Ah...those were the days! | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Loring AFB in Presque Isle, Maine in the mid '60's was a series of snow tunnels by Spring thaw. We didn't get it all at once but we got it pretty continuously. Our alert trucks were parked in front of the alert facility with two cables attached. One for the battery trickle charger, the other for the engine heater. Those middle of the night klaxons were sporty. "Did you pull the plugs?? Not me. Nav, Guns, somebody, anybody??" The billiards room (yes we had one) had a series of cartoons framed on the walls. One showed an alert truck, lights and sirens flashing, dragging the alert shack behind because someone forgot to pull the plugs. We had to laugh to keep from crying. We had our own copy of Doctor Strangelove that played monthly. I left December 11, 1966 and I don't miss it (or Strategic Air Command), one bit. I celebrate the anniversary every year. |
