As usual, OPA Administration is full of liars and deniers. Resort to CYA and make crap up as they go along. Thanks for the truth !!! | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: SO...the question should be WHY is there fecal matter in the water around the S&R club???? This is certainly not a normal thing, is there a sewer discharge in the area? I know there is one into the St Martin River, just North of the Rt 90 bridge, but am not aware of a facility near the S&R club. There is no treatment facility near the S&R club. The Coastkeeper says much of the problem is owners along canals allowing their pets to poop on the laws and not cleaning it up, as well as people feeding geese. She also mentioned to me that the "wastewater system is leaking." I am not sure what she means but intend to look into that accusation. Moving on to the USEPA RWQC. I am not sure where the 104 cfu/100ml standard quoted came from but according to this document (Click Here) Section 1.2 states that "The 1986 criteria document I see the following in the document you reference: The 1986 criteria contained four different SSM values corresponding to the 75th, 82nd, 90th, and 95th percentiles of the expected water quality sampling distribution at the GM criteria value. EPA recommended using different SSM values on the basis of the use intensity of the recreational water. However, treating the SSM as a never to be exceeded value for such an evaluation would impart a level of protection much more stringent than intended by the 1986 criteria GM value. For example, a marine beach that is in compliance with the 1986 GM criteria for enterococci (GM = 35 cfu per 100 mL) would be expected to have 25% of the sample values above 104 cfu per 100 mL (the 75th percentile of the expected water quality sample distribution) because of expected variability in individual water quality measurements. Expecting that beach to never exceed 104 cfu per 100 mL would require an actual GM much lower, associated with a lower illness rate, than the recommended GM criterion value. As for swimming in your neighbor's fecal matter, as a doctor, you know more about that than I do. However, OPA president Doug Parks is quoted in a local paper as saying his grandchildren swim there and he just tells them not to drink the water. No joke. |
