Interacting with and managing employees are not the same. Our problem is that the board too often tries to manage employees by instructing them and telling them what to do. That's the GM's job. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Any board member, but especially the President, should not have any management style with OPA employees. Interfering in the management of employees is the central problem and it needs to stop. I keep hearing this refrain, but OPA board members have always interacted to some extent with employees, primarily management employees. The budget process is a perfect example. The GM brings department heads before the board to explain and discuss their budgets, for starters. Department heads and board members often interact to some extent on committees. The bylaws do not prohibit board members from interacting with employees. B-08 does address how board members interact with everyone, so perhaps that is why Colby decided to make her charges B-08 charges. Six board members found no B-08 rules were broken. Not a single board member voted to convict Perrone of the B-08 charges. The community is now debating that decision but, as Frank Daly says, "B-08 prevents the accused from making any comments to defend themselves." I said before B-08 was passed that the board did not know what kind of a bag of worms it was opening. Colette Horn insisted on having it, and the rest of the board went along. |
