State Senator Mary Beth Carozza last week has filed her objections to giving Maryland’s approval to build a new concrete pier in the West Ocean City harbor for the offshore wind project. Here’s a link to that letter. Click Here
Among the problems Senator Carozza noted were: (excerpts) < This is NOT “similar to other pier and bulkhead work completed in the vicinity” as the MDE states. It is far different in size and scope from anything else in the vicinity. < This creates a bottleneck at the entrance of the harbor, resulting in congestion and threatening boat passenger safety . . . < The critically-needed horseshoe crab harvesting for the biomedical industry currently is taking place at Martin Fish Company in the West Ocean City Harbor. < (Thus) . . .the horseshoe harvesting would move to another location either outside of the State of Maryland or outside of Worcester County. . . . contributing to the higher death rate of the crabs which can no longer be “bled” and immediately returned to their natural habitat. < A 10,590 square-foot concrete surface with machinery and a portable crane would dramatically and permanently change the working harbor character of the West Ocean City Harbor. < (This) would forever change the charm and character of Maryland’s only commercial fishing harbor with access to the Atlantic Ocean. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Those “three” turbine blade failures were from new offshore projects, still being constructed, which is part of the citizens anger & disappointment. And likely becomes part of the law suits to be filed. New equipment should not be failing ! Hundreds, possibly thousands of land based blades have failed within about 6 years to 8 years,-- with some crashing to the ground, others are replaced sooner when wear was noticed. And the harsh oceanic location may accelerate blade failures. Citizens in Texas and other US locations have been complaining about the junked blades, accumulating as many as thousands.
