The US Wind environmental filing provides for a Plan D, called No Surface Occupancy to Reduce Impacts Alternative. In English it means how far out can we place turbines where someone sitting on their beach chair cannot reasonably see the turbines.
This Plan D, in my opinion, looks to be US Wind's last stand position. It's set at 14 miles. Interestingly, the US Wind filing states that "public input" requested turbines no closer than 15 miles. Look for US Wind to agree with 14 or 15 miles if pushed hard enough. Not sure who was the "public input" that set the marker at 15 miles but it's certainly not Mayor Meehan. His recent letter to the Governor is pleading that the 26-mile marker used in Virginia and North Carolina be replicated off of Ocean City. IMO, the Mayor knows that Plan D at 14 or even 15 miles will not be far enough out to blot out eventual 1065-foot tall turbines. |
