Again thanks. Very interesting info. about the visibility issue. Makes it very understandable about bringing adverse impact against local tourism, -- the life blood of the Ocean City area is being threatened.
Yet there's also more concerns arising. To make matters worse, there’s now the threat of an additional wind turbine project offshore from Ocean City. The Fed govt has sold additional offshore acreage to a Norwegian wind installer. The Equinor company is paying $75 million for the leasing rights of a 101,443 acres alongside of northern Ocean City and the Delaware beaches. Thus the town’s legal fight against the U.S. Wind project will likely be expanding to include Equinor. Seems a very disappointing development, and this indeed magnifies the problems being faced, Source Headline: New offshore wind area east of Ocean City to be leased to Norwegian company, Equinor Click Here Most folks are aware that the wind turbine projects do face another glaring weakness. Obviously, they only produce power when the wind is blowing at a threshold speed. Otherwise, backup power must take over, to avoid blackouts. This means that power companies still must maintain their investments in reliable fossil and nuclear fueled plants. Thus raising costs, to the extent that a portion of power plant costs become duplicate expenses. Its necessary whenever interruptible sources like wind power are being relied upon. This blows a big hole in claims "bragging" about how many thousands of homes will be powered by wind energy. Wind power is perhaps off, half of the time, more or less. And costs paid by folks will be pushed up and up. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Regarding visibility, Mayor Mehan also pointed out how the height of the turbines planned has increased by startling footage. Although originally to be 550 feet tall, current size is now 938 ft tall. Even that could grow since the newest model turbines are 1065 ft tall. Weather dependent (especially sea haze), roughly, you could stand on the surf and not see any of an object 300 foot tall that is 10.7 miles out over the horizon. Or any of an object 940 foot tall that is 32 miles out. A 938-foot-tall wind turbine sitting only 11 miles out is going to be terribly obvious. Even at 26 miles out like Virginia and North Carolina you will have some view albeit slight. Mayor Meehan is also worried about views above the surf level. Roughly only 15 foot of elevation (think OP Beach Club) or first few floors of a condo or hotel and these figures change dramatically. |
