For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: The issue is not a reflection on the job David is trying to do now. He has a challenging task and I wish him the best. I do hope there is a positive change at the Yacht Club. With all due respect I don't see David being able to reverse the current trend at the Yacht Club simply with better service and food. He has no control over the seasonal nature of the area and that isn't going to change. He may well improve the already profitable months in time, but there is no way that will offset the loses of staying open year round. Most of the loses are through poor operational controls which includes staying open when business will not support the expense of doing so. That is unless there is another grand scheme coming that we don't know about yet. Remember we have been through that recently with Java Bay Cafe and the open for business practice. Seemed like a good idea at the time. We heard how great the business was while it lost even more money. Took us from losing -$17,818 in 2009-2010 to losing -$91,377 in 2010-2011 to losing -$175,647 in 2011-2012. I don't measure success that way. No matter how hard you try you can't draw patrons who aren't here. Look at the number of restaurants in Ocean City that close for the off season. If they could make money they would be open. There are a lot of business who stay open to maintain their customer base and their goal is to break even or better in the off season to do so. I know, I managed one of them. You make your profit during the season and cut your loses in the off season. And you control your expense cost vs. your sales every week of the year. Just because you do a lot of business in the season isn't an excuse to lose site of expense control and over spend. |
