Yes, disgruntled employees are frequently outspoken after they leave. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: They surely should not be taking public positions at odds with board policy. While I was not a management employee I did have the responsibility to communicate board decisions particularly as applied to employee benefits. I tried not to "blame on the board" but to explain why the decision was made and the business rational (prevailing practices etc) for the decision. I never moved forward with anything that was not reviewed/approved by the GM and or the Board. I became the bad guy I guess because I was the messenger. Where appropriate I did push back against the board in communications with the Board. Several examples were the 401k changes and the negative impact particularly to the police department. I believe that situation was subsequently corrected. Another example was the health care package. While there was some pressure to change the health care package, for the most part it was in line with the marketplace in terms of the benefits structure and the employee contributions. I took a huge amount of heat regarding some changes to paid time off practices. At the time they were quite generous. If something was out of step I tried to correct it. For instance I fought like hell to get the board to address employee pay issues. This was postponed to yet another $50000 study a year after I left. I also felt I had a mandate by both the Board and the GM to bring good business practices to OPA so maybe I took on that challenge with more "gusto" then I would today given the benefit of hindsight. I guess as a homeowner I had a better appreciation of "working for OPA". So while I was supportive of the Board as an employee, not so much as an "ex" employee. |
