![]() ![]() Section 5: OPA Board Subject: Racquet Sports Debate Msg# 1220438

Here's the problem, some of the racquet sports are closer to breakeven than others. Tennis has fewer members, less revenue and higher continuing maintenance costs than the others. Rather than push those costs onto a slowly diminishing tennis program, the decision has been made to spread the burden around. So the other sports will now pay what tennis pays. Makes sense on one sense...but takes a bit of crunching on the other. The history of the center over the last five or six years show players gradually moving away from the heavier physical stresses of tennis towards the pickle/platform sports. That's not just here but nationwide, sad to say, as the population ages and the younger generation finds other pursuits. Obviously a generalization but then again, so is Underkoffer's market research. So, his theory that one size fits all is appropriate because it will encourage the members to play other sports is debatable...at best.
The financial numbers of this year which are showing a $7,200 loss descending into a $33,248 loss next year is puzzling but maybe I missed the explanation. Higher fees next year with no projected major loss in players but a $25,000 further loss? There has to be a planned accumulation there for some of the proposed capital improvements. If so, those campaigning for them should step back and consider whether the price is worth it. If not, then this one size fits all move is for accounting convenience. Granted the present system of unwieldy but could be greatly simplified without major surgery. Oh and by the way, I have no problem with non residents paying more. Actually, in most cases, I think they're still getting a break. The resident players are part of the Association that made the capital expenditures that put the facility where it is. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: He also voiced concern that the drop-in fee increase from the current $8 to $10 for OPA members and from $11 to $13 for non-residents could cause people to go to other facilities in the area. So go elsewhere! The proposed fee schedule attempts to put racket sports at a break even point. It's not fair for everybody to support a few.....this argument has been going on as long as I have been an owner, 1995. |
