Study--touting how offshore wind will lower energy costs:
Back from Oct 2023 there’s a detailed message # 1193979 on politics forum refuting all the studies claiming that wind and solar renewables will produce cheaper power. In fact those claims leave out major costs such as replacement power, when the wind isn’t blowing or sun isn’t shining, For the sake of brevity, here’s just one chart. And it no surprise that maintenance of offshore wind facilities face the challenges of oceanic weather, driving up costs. The wind turbines at Prince Edward Island, Canada were claimed to reduce power costs but instead have done the opposite. Click Here Quote: "The turbines -- were supposed to lower power prices and provide sustainable energy. Instead, they became a financial sinkhole and a symbol of unfulfilled promises. The PEI Energy Corporation admitted that the turbines had been offline for between 114 and 476 days, a staggering admission of failure." In addition, the entire offshore turbine industry has been suffering for spiraling higher costs, and companies have been cancelling projects because of financial pressures. For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Marty, thanks for sending me a link to that North Carolina survey about the potential adverse impact on tourism from offshore wind operations. Here is the link: Study: Near-Shore Wind Farms Would Have Big Impact on Coastal Tourism | NC State News (ncsu.edu) That study from April 2016 looks to be as useless as these surveys OPA wastes time and effort on. For starters, they picked regular oceanfront home renters, obviously a crowd of rather well off folks. Then they did the survey by handing the participants doctored images for their opinion. The images were manipulated to show hundreds of offshore turbines beginning at 5 miles out. Then they injected a question about how much less would they expect to pay in rent for each distance to turbines scenario. From the article: "A study by economists at North Carolina State University finds that most people are unwilling to rent vacation homes that have a view of offshore wind turbines – and that those who will rent expect steep rental discounts unless the turbines are more than eight miles offshore." By golly Marty, if the Ocean City turbines are 10 miles out, there should be almost no economic impact according to the NC State survey you reference. Seriously, the survey is useless and any academic involved should be embarrassed. How about this one also from NC State only six years later touting how offshore wind will lower energy costs: Study Finds Offshore Wind Could Drive Down Energy Costs in New England | NC State News (ncsu.edu) I love it. |
